The 18th century was the century of porcelain. Among princes, aristocrats, and wealthy burghers, the passion for 'white gold' bordered on addiction — contemporaries even coined the term 'maladie de porcelaine' to describe it. Those who could not afford the exclusive luxury of true porcelain turned to faience as an alternative, seeking to satisfy the same refined taste for decorative ceramics that defined Rococo culture.
