Picasso Shared and Divided: The Artist and His Image in East and West Germany

This temporary exhibition at Museum Ludwig, Cologne, examines the fascinating and complex reception of Pablo Picasso in the two Germanys. Divided by ideology yet united in their fascination with the Spanish master, East and West Germany each constructed a distinct image of the artist — as a communist icon, a modernist hero, or a cultural trophy.

The show brings together artworks, documents, posters, and archival materials to trace how political systems, cultural institutions, and individual artists on both sides of the border interpreted, appropriated, and contested Picasso's identity and legacy throughout the Cold War era.
