· Basel
"When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting" is a landmark group exhibition bringing together works that trace the rich and varied tradition of Black figurative painting over the past century.
Spanning diverse geographies, generations, and artistic movements, the show foregrounds the ways in which Black artists have depicted Black subjects — from intimate domestic scenes to monumental celebrations of community, joy, resistance, and resilience.
The exhibition invites visitors to consider how representation in painting has evolved, and how the act of seeing and being seen carries profound political and emotional weight.
