Walter Sickert (1860-1942): Painting and Transgression

14 Oct 2022 — 29 Jan 2023 at Musée des Beaux-Arts de la ville de Paris · Paris
This temporary exhibition shines a spotlight on Walter Sickert (1860-1942), one of the most singular and transgressive figures in European modern art. A pupil of Whistler and a close associate of Degas, Sickert forged a distinctive style that challenged Victorian propriety and anticipated 20th-century figurative painting.

Through paintings, drawings, and archival material, the show traces his restless career across London, Venice, and Dieppe, revealing an artist who revelled in the gritty textures of music halls, working-class interiors, and the ambiguous drama of the human body. His unflinching gaze and unconventional compositions made him a lasting influence on later generations of British painters.
