Ribera, Shadows and Light
5 Nov 2024 — 23 Feb 2025 at Petit Palais
· Paris
The Petit Palais in Paris presents "Ribera, Shadows and Light", a major temporary exhibition dedicated to the Spanish-born Baroque master Jusepe de Ribera (1591–1652). Running across 2024 and into 2025, the show brings together key works that illuminate Ribera's powerful command of chiaroscuro — the interplay of deep shadow and intense light that defines his dramatic, often visceral canvases.
Working for much of his career in Naples, then under Spanish rule, Ribera forged a singular style that absorbed the influence of Caravaggio while developing a raw, earthy naturalism entirely his own. This exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to encounter his saints, philosophers, and mythological figures in concentrated form, tracing the evolution of his technique and his enduring impact on European painting.
