Human Rights and Revolution – Peter Ochs (1752–1821)

This temporary exhibition at the Basel Historical Museum shines a light on Peter Ochs (1752–1821), one of the most significant political figures in Swiss history. A jurist, statesman, and reformer, Ochs played a central role in the Helvetic Revolution of 1798 and was instrumental in drafting the Helvetic Constitution — a landmark document inspired by Enlightenment ideals and the principles of the French Revolution.

The exhibition traces Ochs's remarkable life and career, from his early years in Basel to his engagement with the revolutionary movements that reshaped Europe at the turn of the 19th century.
