The Rainbow Flag, today recognized as a global icon of the LGBTQ+ movement, was first created in this form in 1978 by Gilbert Baker. Commissioned for the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade, the flag was originally sewn in nylon by Lynn Segerblom and James McNamara. Baker gifted the work to MoMA in 2015, where it now forms part of the permanent collection as a landmark object of design and political history.
