Bouchardon (1698-1762): A Sublime Idea of Beauty

from 14 Sep 2016 at Louvre Museum · Paris
The Louvre presents a major temporary exhibition devoted to Edme Bouchardon (1698-1762), one of the most celebrated French sculptors of the eighteenth century. Trained in Paris and shaped by a formative decade in Rome, Bouchardon developed a distinctive vision rooted in the antique — a sublime idea of beauty that set him apart from the ornamental exuberance of his Rococo contemporaries.

The exhibition brings together sculptures, drawings, and preparatory works to trace the full arc of his career, from his prize-winning early studies to landmark royal commissions including the equestrian statue of Louis XV. Through these works, visitors can explore how Bouchardon redefined French sculpture and laid the groundwork for the Neoclassical movement that would follow.
