During archaeological excavations in front of the Red City Hall in Berlin in 2010, a remarkable discovery came to light. A total of 16 sculptures of Classical Modernism were recovered from a cellar that had been filled with bomb rubble. Shortly after their recovery, it became clear that these sculptures had been missing for a very long time — lost to the chaos of war and the persecution of so-called "degenerate art" under the Nazi regime.
