Solo show
Alison Bechdel. The Essential
5 Jul 2025 — 26 Oct 2025 at Cartoonmuseum Basel
· Basel
The Cartoonmuseum Basel presents a special exhibition dedicated to Alison Bechdel, one of the most influential cartoonists of our time. Best known for her long-running comic strip 'Dykes to Watch Out For' and her acclaimed graphic memoirs 'Fun Home' and 'Are You My Mother?', Bechdel has shaped the landscape of contemporary comics and popular culture alike.
The exhibition brings together essential works spanning her career, offering visitors an in-depth look at her distinctive visual language, her sharp wit, and her deeply personal storytelling. Bechdel's name has also entered the cultural lexicon through the Bechdel Test, a now-famous measure of female representation in fiction.
This show is a rare opportunity to encounter the breadth and depth of Bechdel's artistic output in a museum setting.
