Yoshitoshi. Master of the Moon

1 Oct 2026 — 4 Jan 2027 at Van Gogh Museum · Amsterdam
This exhibition shines a spotlight on Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), widely regarded as the last great master of the Japanese woodblock print tradition. Working at a time of profound social and artistic upheaval in Meiji-era Japan, Yoshitoshi forged a singular visual language that blended classical Japanese themes with a raw, expressive intensity.

The moon — a recurring motif throughout his career — serves as the guiding thread of this presentation. From serene nocturnal landscapes to scenes of myth, history, and the supernatural, Yoshitoshi's prints reveal an artist of extraordinary imagination and technical mastery. His celebrated series, including "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon", stand as landmarks of world printmaking.

Visitors are invited to discover the full arc of Yoshitoshi's career, tracing his evolution from early warrior prints to the refined, psychologically charged works of his final years.
