Western Representations of Non-Western Cultures, 1880–2002
from 28 Sep 2002 at Wereldmuseum Rotterdam
· Rotterdam
This exhibition examines more than a century of Western visual representations of non-Western cultures, spanning the years 1880 to 2002. Through a broad range of works, it explores how artists, illustrators, and image-makers in the West constructed, romanticised, or distorted their visions of societies beyond Europe and North America.
The show invites visitors to reflect critically on the power dynamics embedded in these images and the lasting influence of colonial and post-colonial perspectives on the visual arts.
