The principle of unusual neighbourhoods plays a central role in Surrealism. "As beautiful as the chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissecting table" — so wrote Lautreamont, whom Andre Breton quoted in the First Manifesto of Surrealism. For it is precisely the collision of unrelated objects and ideas that generates the uncanny charge Surrealism sought: meaning born not from logic, but from the electric friction between things that have no business being together.
