The Centraal Museum in Utrecht presents The Bentvueghels. A Notorious Art Society in Rome, on view from 11 February to 4 June 2023.
The Bentvueghels were a boisterous and unconventional brotherhood of mainly Dutch and Flemish artists who gathered in Rome during the seventeenth century. Known for their raucous initiation rituals, irreverent nicknames, and hard-living ways, they left a vivid mark on the artistic life of the Eternal City. This exhibition, accompanied by a scholarly catalog, sheds light on their work, their community, and their lasting influence on European art.
