Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion was the major high fashion exhibition of 2024 at the Anna Wintour Costume Center, a wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art that houses the Costume Institute's permanent collection.
Announced on November 8, 2023, the exhibition ran from May 10 to September 2, 2024. It brought together approximately 250 garments and accessories drawn from the Costume Institute's permanent holdings — many too fragile to be displayed in conventional ways.
To give these delicate pieces new life, the exhibition made extensive use of artificial intelligence and computer-generated imagery (CGI), presenting the works through the elemental themes of sea, land, and sky. These natural forces served as a metaphor for the fragility and ephemerality of fashion, while also providing a framework to examine the cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal that run through the history of dress.
