Treasures from the Rhine. The Barbarian Hoard of Neupotz
until 31 Dec 2050 at Neues Museum
· Berlin
For a long time, the Xantener Knabe — a Roman bronze statue discovered by fishermen in the Rhine near Xanten in 1858 — stood alone in the Bacchussaal of the Neues Museum. Now the bronze youth gains company on a grand scale: iron tools and wagon parts, padlocks and leg irons, bronze cauldrons and silver tableware.
These objects form the so-called Barbarenschatz von Neupotz (Barbarian Hoard of Neupotz), one of the most significant finds of Roman-era metalwork ever recovered from the Rhine. The exhibition brings together this extraordinary assemblage to shed light on the turbulent late-Roman period and the peoples who crossed — and plundered — the empire's northern frontier.
