Teylers Museum presents "Pioneer on Paper", an exhibition dedicated to Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), one of the most inventive and prolific draughtsmen of the Northern Renaissance.
Van Heemskerck's drawings served as the basis for an enormous output of prints that circulated across Europe, spreading new visual ideas and shaping the tastes of his age. His time in Rome in the 1530s proved transformative: he absorbed the grandeur of classical antiquity and the dynamism of Italian Mannerism, then brought those influences back to the Netherlands, where they left a lasting mark on the visual arts.
The exhibition brings together a rich selection of works on paper — drawings and prints — that reveal the full range of Van Heemskerck's ambition and skill, from intimate studies to monumental compositions.
