Past as you order?

16 Apr 2025 — 25 May 2025 at Budapest · Hungary
"Past as you order?" takes its provocative title from the age-old practice of bending history to political will. Focusing on medieval Hungary and Russia, the exhibition investigates how rulers, chroniclers, and institutions manipulated the past — rewriting genealogies, forging documents, and crafting origin myths — to legitimise authority and consolidate power.

Through manuscripts, artefacts, and scholarly commentary, visitors are invited to reflect on the surprisingly modern resonance of medieval political time travel: the idea that the past is never fixed, but endlessly reordered by those who hold power in the present.
