Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi: Father and Daughter Painters in Baroque Italy

from 15 Oct 2001 at Museo di Palazzo Venezia · Rome
This major travelling exhibition brought together the works of Orazio Gentileschi and his daughter Artemisia Gentileschi, two towering figures of Italian Baroque painting. Presented in Rome, New York, and St. Louis between 2001 and 2002, the show offered a rare opportunity to examine the artistic dialogue between father and daughter, tracing their shared influences, diverging styles, and remarkable individual achievements.

Orazio, a close follower of Caravaggio, brought a lyrical refinement to the dramatic chiaroscuro of his time. Artemisia, one of the first women to achieve recognition in the male-dominated world of European art, developed a bold and emotionally intense style that has captivated scholars and audiences for centuries. Together, their works illuminate the richness and complexity of Baroque painting in Italy and beyond.
