Max Beerbohm: The Price of Celebrity

20 Oct 2023 — 28 Jan 2024 at New York Public Library Main Branch · New York City
Max Beerbohm: The Price of Celebrity is an exhibition held at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library during 2023-2024. It examines the life, work, and enduring legacy of Max Beerbohm — the brilliant caricaturist, essayist, and parodist who became one of the most celebrated wits of the Victorian and Edwardian ages.

Through drawings, caricatures, letters, and rare archival materials, the exhibition explores how Beerbohm navigated — and shrewdly commented upon — the emerging culture of celebrity in his time, skewering the famous and powerful with elegant, incisive humor.
