This temporary exhibition at the Rietberg Museum examines one of the most enduring tensions in religious history: the role of imagery in Islam and Christianity. From sacred icons to acts of iconoclasm, the show investigates how both faiths have alternately embraced and condemned the power of the image — as an object of devotion, a tool of theology, and a target of prohibition.

Bringing together works spanning centuries and continents, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the deep cultural and spiritual forces that have shaped attitudes toward visual representation in two of the world's major religions.
