"Nebrija (c. 1444-1522). The Pride of Being a Grammarian"

25 Nov 2022 — 9 Apr 2023 at Biblioteca Nacional de España · Madrid
This exhibition pays tribute to Antonio de Nebrija (c. 1444-1522), one of the most influential humanists of the Spanish Renaissance and author of the first grammar of the Castilian language, published in 1492. Through manuscripts, printed books, documents, and historical artefacts, the show traces Nebrija's intellectual journey — from his formative years in Bologna to his pivotal role at the University of Salamanca — and examines his enduring contribution to linguistics, education, and the codification of the Spanish language.

The title, "The Pride of Being a Grammarian", echoes Nebrija's own words and captures the conviction with which he championed the study and standardisation of language as a tool of culture and empire. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how a single scholar's work shaped the way millions of people read, write, and speak to this day.
