As far back as 2,000 years ago, China's emperors commissioned portraits of loyal officials and generals. This presentation features depictions of meritorious officers ordered by the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736–1795) for display in the Ziguangge — the Hall of Purple Radiance — a prestigious imperial venue that served simultaneously as a ceremonial hall, a gallery of heroes, and a stage for the projection of military might.
