Blaise Cendrars (1887–1961): Poetry Is Everything
26 May 2023 — 24 Sep 2023 at The Morgan Library & Museum
· New York City
The Morgan Library & Museum presented this 2023 exhibition dedicated to Blaise Cendrars (1887–1961), the Swiss-French poet, novelist, and inveterate traveler whose bold, fragmented verse helped define the modernist avant-garde.
Drawing on manuscripts, letters, photographs, and rare printed materials, the show traced Cendrars's extraordinary life — from his early encounters with the Parisian art world to his friendships with artists such as Fernand Leger and Marc Chagall, and his restless journeys across continents.
The title, "Poetry Is Everything," captures the animating spirit of Cendrars's output: for him, poetry was not a literary genre but a way of seeing and inhabiting the world. The exhibition offered visitors a rare opportunity to encounter the man behind landmark works and to understand his lasting influence on twentieth-century literature and art.
