Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room
from 5 Nov 2021 at The Met Fifth Avenue
· New York
"Before Yesterday We Could Fly: An Afrofuturist Period Room" is an immersive installation that blends historical memory with speculative vision. Drawing on the rich tradition of the period room — a museum format that reconstructs domestic interiors from a specific era — the exhibition reimagines what such a space might look like through an Afrofuturist perspective.
Afrofuturism brings together African and African American history, culture, and identity with science fiction, technology, and visions of the future. This installation invites visitors to step into a world where the past is not fixed but alive with possibility, honoring the resilience and creativity of Black communities while projecting their stories forward in time.
