Alter Egos | Projected Selves
22 Nov 2021 — 1 May 2022 at Metropolitan Museum of Art
· New York City
Alter Egos | Projected Selves was presented at the Metropolitan Museum of Art during 2021–2022. The exhibition examined the enduring human impulse to imagine, construct, and perform alternative identities — the alter ego as a creative and psychological tool.
Drawing on works from the Met's wide-ranging collection, the show explored how artists across different periods and cultures have adopted personas, masks, and invented selves to push beyond the boundaries of their lived experience. From costume and disguise to role-play and fantasy, the exhibition invited visitors to consider the fluid relationship between the self and its projections.
